This fucking book, amirite? In wonder when his next one is coming out. That would just make my year.
He does have a novel coming out this year! Well, according to Wikipedia, anyway.
Have you read any of his other novels? Like, I hear/read a lot about The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger, but hardly anything at all about his other stuff. I wonder why that is.
As the kids dance around the front yard under the night sky and the lights, I see something.
Lua and Marie are holding hands.
They look like they’re so happy, just inside this moment, watching the kids and the lights on their old fibro house.
Lua kisses her.
Just softly on the lips.
And she kisses back.
Sometimes people are beautiful.
Not in looks.
Not in what they say.
Just in the way they are.
Damn you, Mr Zusak, for once again taking the heart out of my chest and pummeling, just mercilessly, ruthlessly pummeling it with Feelings. Feelings.
It’s my fault, really. I should have expected it after being totally and utterly floored by The Book Thief.
But no.
I let my guard down. Because your writing/narrating style is so spartan that it almost sounds robotic, at times. Your characters so blasé about everything that’s happening around them, to the point where it’s almost frustrating, as a reader.
At the start.
And this is just so that people will let their guards down.
Because then, from out of nowhere

I HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOU.
AND IT’S ALL THESE HUMANY-WUMANY FEELINGS.
BECAUSE MY JOB IS TO MAKE PEOPLE REALIZE THAT EVEN CYNICAL JERKS LIKE YOU CARE.
BECAUSE YOU’RE HUMAN.
And you’re a sneaky bastard of a writer, Markus Zusak.
And bless you for that.
(I may inundate your dashboards with quotes now, Tumblr)
I’m completely and utterly in love with every one of these characters. Completely.
This stupid book’s just going to make me bawl when I reach the end, isn’t it?
