Behind Every Great Novelist (Illustration for the NY Times Book Review)
I sort of evolved this huge fantasy in which I would be carrying a copy of Lord of the Rings and slip into an alternate dimension exactly the same as ours — except that Tolkien had not existed and had not written Lord of the Rings. And then I would have to get an adult to type this book out, because I knew that if I sent the book in to a publisher they wouldn’t publish it as by me, so I was going to have to persuade an adult to type the whole thing out. Then murder the adult, ‘cause you don’t want this thing getting traced back to you, honestly. Gonna have to cover your traces. And then I would get to be the author of Lord of the Rings.

These are the sort of comments I would also hope for if I ever became an established writer person.

Jill Thompson found some very old photos of me, which she presented me with this morning. This one is from 1995, or perhaps a little earlier.
I scanned them to send to Amanda in Australia to cheer her up after her mini bike-accident today.
I thought I’d post this one, as the most amusing of the lot.
I am so brooding. Look I am so brooding. This is me being brooding. In case you were wondering I am brooding or something.
Brooding icon.
